  1. A.      Introduction:


This position serves as the Medical Director for the Annette Island Service Unit.


The purpose of this position is to provide a medical officer to serve as a Medical Director and to perform professional duties of a medical officer in the treatment of patients with general medical maladies.


  1. B.         Major Duties:


Serves as Medical Director and, as such, provides general direction and supervision to all clinical services. Provides direction to planning of Service Unit health programs. Plans schedule, ensures medical staff is functioning appropriately, and serves as chief advisor to the Service Unit Director on all clinical matters.


Plans medical staffing in clinic, observes work of medical staff, evaluates their performance, approves leave, and provides consultative service on medical matters. Promotes effective working relationships between clinical, administrative, and other ancillary staff of the clinic. Participates in interagency health programs and serves as medical advisor to the Native Health Board.


Performs general medical diagnostic and therapeutic services in the clinic, providing for complete care of patients. Such patients may include maternity, pediatric, contagious disease, injuries, and other categories of medical care.


Provides treatment for emergency cases, including administration of medications and procedures within the province of capabilities of the facility.


Provides consultative and collaborative services to related health and family services components.



  1. C.      Supervisory Controls:


This position is under the general supervision of the Service Unit Director. Incumbent performs duties independently, receiving only general professional direction from the Area Deputy Director. Work is evaluated in terms of overall quality of medical care provided. Some consultation is available from specialists at the Alaska Native Medical Center, from providers at SEARHC, and at Ketchikan Medical Center. Guidelines for fulfillment of duties include area and Service Unit policies and medical staff regulations.


  1. D.     Other Significant Facts:


Required qualifications are an M.D. or D.O. degree, Board Eligibility or Board Certified status, and a license to practice medicine in the United States. Maintains DEA registration and other necessary and state required credentials.


Rotates “on call” coverage after clinic hours and on weekends.


Represents the Service Unit at designated state organizations and meetings.
