Alaskan Native Cultures

Alaska Natives is a collective name for Alaska’s indigenous people groups. When one realizes the immense geographic size* of the state of Alaska one can begin to understand the rich cultural diversity distributed throughout the state. There are five major cultural/regional groupings:  Southeast Coastal Indians (Tlingit & Haida), Interior Indians (Athabascans), Aleuts, Southern Eskimos (Yupik), and Northern Eskimos (Inupiat).

* Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas, the next-largest state, and occupies 16% of the total US land area; the E-W extension is 2261 mi (3639 km)….. Alaska has over 656,400 square miles. If placed on top of the mainland it would stretch from Atlanta to Los Angeles.
